Location sound recording & production audio services in Western Australia

ASSG 2025 — Best Sound for Documentary

Winner, awarded by the Australian Screen Sound Guild for Yurlu | Country.

ASSG 2022 — Best Sound for an Independent Feature Film

Nominee, recognised by the Australian Screen Sound Guild for Pieces.

Fifteen years of location sound in Western Australia teaches you that the recording is only half the job. The other half is reading the room — knowing when to move a mic and when to leave it, when to speak up on set and when to stay out of the way, and what the edit is going to need three months from now. Documentary, factual, drama, reality, ENG and TVC, on multitrack with Zaxcom wireless, IFB and timecode running to the whole crew.

Perth-based, working across WA, interstate and overseas. Sound and CASA-certified aerial drone are two services, not one compromise — book either on its own, or both together and get one crew member, one booking and one less thing to coordinate on the day.

Where the work happens

Most WA factual work isn’t shot in a studio

It’s shot inside an aircraft with the engine running, on a boat, on a mine site, or two hours down a track in the Pilbara with no mains power and forty degrees of heat. Those are the conditions that decide whether a recording is usable, and they’re the conditions the kit is chosen and maintained for — every battery under 100Wh so the whole package flies as carry-on, and enough redundancy that a dead transmitter doesn’t stop the shoot.

The reason producers mention being calm isn’t temperament. It’s having been in the situation before and knowing which of the three available fixes is the one that won’t cost the schedule. See the conditions, or read how that turns into a shoot day.

Field notes

Things built on the bench, and published

Most of what a sound recordist knows stays in their head or their flight case. These are the bits worth writing down — built because the reference I wanted didn’t exist.

  • Audio pinout diagram generator — pick a connector for each end and it draws the wiring, Y-splits included. Free, no sign-up, and it prints.
  • Soldering a 3-pin LEMO — the pinout, the LEMO part numbers, the crimp measurements and the manufacturer’s own assembly sequence, with a one-page bench sheet you can print and work from.
  • Drone permissions in WA — a directory of Perth-area land managers, verified by writing to each one, with the position, contact and date last checked. It didn’t exist anywhere, so I made it.
